In this post, I am here with a spoiler-free review of The Killer, a Netflix movie directed by David Fincher and starring Michael Fassbender.
🎬 The Killer
The plot of The Killer is about a hit man who misses his target, the men he works for hurt his loved one as punishment, and he takes revenge on everyone who caused it. This is the plot of the movie; no more, no less. But it is more with its wonderful cinematography, admirable cast performances, slightly satisfying action and tension that keeps the suspense alive. What’s more, from the beginning to the end of the movie, it feels the hand of a filmmaker as masterful as David Fincher. But…
As the main character’s inner voice accompanies us throughout the movie, it seems like we are watching from his point of view, but since he is a murderer, it is clear how much empathy the rational viewers and you, dear readers, will have. However, it is possible to say that this is well reflected by his internal debate and his stance on the road to the target.
On the other hand, this inner dialog of the character occupies a large part of the movie; it can even be said that it becomes monotonous at times. Yes, there is no big plot, but it would not be right to say that there is none and that it is just a monologue; but strangely, those who say otherwise are not wrong. If you don’t have the patience of an assassin, at which point the audience can relate to the character, the movie is likely to be boring. Because at almost two hours long, The Killer moves at a leisurely pace for the most part; perhaps the action in a few scenes is too fast.
We can’t help but admire the actors and actresses, because their performances make everything look better than it is. Sound, music, light… The sign that these are good is that they make you forget that you are in front of the screen, I think it’s successful.
All in all, despite its big production, The Killer has a simple story and a slow pace with a script that doesn’t offer anything new; moreover, it would be hard to say that this is one of David Fincher’s best works. But despite all these negative statements, I think it can be enjoyable to watch. My rating for The Killer would be around seven out of ten.
