The Purge tv series is directed by James DeMonaco, who is also the director of The Purge movies, is a tv series that was filmed for two seasons in 2018-2019. This article focuses on the first season of tv series.
Once a year in the US, all crimes and everything becomes legal for twelve hours. More precisely, for twelve hours there is no law, no state. Moreover, people consider themselves purged by killing each other. Not only that, the government encourages its citizens to purge. Moreover, it is argued that this reduces crime rates. Because everyone saves in these twelve hours what they have accumulated over the course of a year. It is not hard to imagine the consequences of such an environment. The Purge series takes place in this universe, which also inspired the movies. Now let’s move on to the spoiler free review.
The Purge
The season one of The Purge show, starring Jessica Garza, Amanda Warren and Lee Tergesen, begins with three different stories that have nothing to do with each other. Moreover, the season consists of ten episodes in which the heroes of these three stories come together in the finale due to their coincidence with the same man.
These ten chapters take place over almost a day, mostly on the night of purification. I won’t go into the details because I don’t want to lose your curiosity and because I think I have summarized enough of the story.
The Purge Season 1 Review and Criticism
The fact that I have never watched The Purge movies allows me to evaluate the series on its own, without being influenced by the movies. What’s more, The Purge show is like a feature film that has been grabbed at both ends, stretched and cut into ten parts. However, it contains a level of character analysis and inadequate storytelling that can only be expected from a short film. I couldn’t find the TV show flavor I was looking for. It’s monotonous in a way that a TV show shouldn’t be. Beyond that, it has a simple and easy-going plot.
The first season of The Purge tv show disappointed me. Yes, it bores you at the beginning and the slow pacing is tiresome, but naturally, after a while, the story takes hold and allows us to empathize with the characters. There is an original and clear logic to this cinematic universe that makes it relevant.
It is good that the series not only condemns those who think they can be purified by killing, but also deals with those who criticize the system, gender inequality, abuses, the disparity between rich and poor and many other social issues, albeit in a shallow way. From this point of view, it can be appreciated.
When I look at other reviews of the series, the second season is said to be much better than the first. There are even some who tell us to skip the first season. If I watch the second season, I will write my comment. But I can’t really recommend you to watch the first season, and if you do, of course I can’t keep you. But I think it should be watched in a carefree time.
My score for The Purge season one: 4.8 /10
